In the Beginning....

Hello, welcome to my new blog. If you are here then you know by now that I have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Can you imagine? Well at least that cuts down on my anxiety about how I will ever find a job as a chaplain - at least for a little while. A few months ago in a routine breast self-exam I found a lump and a dimpling in my right breast. I went to see Dr. Canavan, the oncologist that I have been following up with for that "fake lymphoma" scare, and he sent me for a mammogram and an ultrasound. They were both negative but he told me that he was "unnerved" by what he had felt and wanted me to have an MRI and to see a breast surgeon. I went for the MRI (which was read as negative) and made an appointment with Dr. Jennifer Simmons (at Frankford Hospital - where Sue works - in Philadelphia). I am nothing if not a compliant patient. I saw Dr. Simmons on Tuesday August 19th and she did an exam and pulled out her ultasound machine. I felt her demeanor change and by the time she told me that she wanted to do a biopsy I pretty much knew what the results would show. On Friday, the 22nd, she called to tell me that I had breast cancer. It's interesting how time can actually stop for a few moments. Anyway, I had the weekend to sit with this information and today, Monday August 25th I had another appointment with Dr. Simmons. Susan and Colleen came with me. She could not have been nicer. She explained everything, all my options, and left whatever time we needed to ask questions. She showed us the MRI, which she did not read as negative and said that she would go over it with the radiologist...she has been working to have breast dedicated (specialists) radiologists reading these kinds of films for just this reason. I have what is called Invasive Lobular Carcinoma and we won't know the stage until after my surgery when we see if the lymph nodes are positive. Based on size alone it is between Stage I and Stage II. (I personally am thinking, "Exit, stage left...") One of the challenges to scheduling surgery is the fact that Dr. Simmons is pregnant and set to deliver her second child perhaps even as I am writing this. She is not comfortable planning any surgeries after next Wednesday so mine (mastectomy) will be scheduled sometime in that time frame. We have an appointment to see a plastic surgeon tomorrow to discuss reconstruction options (I didn't realize there were so many) and to set a date for the surgery. These two Drs. work together during surgery and when Dr. Simmons is done, Dr. Gottlieb will still have another 3-4 hours to go. So much for the facts up to this point. I got the idea for this blog from my friend Bev who said that it is an easier way to keep people up to date than having to field phone calls and repeat the same information. I agree. And it will also give me the opportunity to write about my experience. I would love to hear from people so please send your comments to this blog, e-mail, etc. I can use all the prayers and good energy I can get. The few people who do know this information already have asked me how I am feeling. I'm really feeling okay at this point. I think I will heal and do well. I have confidence in my doctor and wonderfully supportive friends/family. The only thing that I am a little anxious about is the staging. And I am sad that I might miss Sue's Graduation from nursing school. Oh, and I am scheduled to sit for my certification as a Clinical Chaplain on Sept 9th...so wish me luck...Thank you in advance for your support and for caring enough to read this. Just keeping you abreast (hee hee). More later......

Our prayers and love are with you. If you need anything, just give a call. I have a book for you. It's called " My Healing Companion". A friend gave it to me and unfortunately I didn't use it b/c it was more for brest cancer. It's a diary type thing. Cheryl kept one when she had cancer and has said it helped her. I now wish I had done that too. I can say I know what you are going through b/c I've been there! The email thing is a GREAT idea! I know you will be OK. Like Mike says, take one week at a time, not one day at a time. Much love to you :) Carole & Mike We are a phone call away!

Sueness,

You know my prayers are on your ass, um I mean your boobs...ok, am I more relieved that you have breast cancer than Lymphoma? YES!

So to answer your previous question back in June; about the house in Cape May...well I went ahead and bought it from mom's estate. So let me know when you want to go down, you can use it prob anytime toward the end of Sept and into Oct. if you want to go down there. NO CHARGE girly girl technot.

I expect and intend and pray for you to have a complete and full recovery and you are in exceptional health ( except for that little lymphoma you've been having for years now... but other than that you are in great shape!). I love you and send you all the Love and Light you can stand! -Rue

Sueness,

Here is a link to a woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer and how she coped with it through keeping her body by diet Alkaline.

http://cancerangel.blogspot.com/

It is called the PH Miracle. Read her blog and see how it resinates for you. I have been using the PH system to lose weight and I have lost 40 lbs to date since last summer. I have to say it works really well for that. I also drink Kombucha tea, which I get from the Co op or from Whole Foods, many health food stores carry it. The founder of the tea, began making it when his mother successfully recovered from cancer by drinking it by the home brew method; which I tried; but found buying it is much easier for me.

It is true, we are only being nice now that we know you really have some life threatening disease, before when it was only lymphoma which was so sketchy that no one really got on board for that, this however...
LOL just kidding....

HEY Susan -
Thanks to Colleen & you for getting this 'blog' thing up here so fast - as a matter of fact - i'm gonna 'blog' the living cancer right out of you by 'blogging' you daily with the loosest-(spelling?) hip-hop associations you've ever heard - like our 'olden, 'golden' years in the ER & eary morning hours.
--Now Cancer, spancer, and donder & blitzen - get going, you knowin you playing with the wrong girl - she's witty, and smart, has a huge big, but now pink, lovely heart - so there's nowhere you can encroach on her healthy tissues or cells - cause "IF' you do you know where u going - no more 'er' squad as she's a 'chaplining' now - so don't even think about trying, you invading, unhealthy fool - she's got the God squad on her side now more than ever - which leaves you & Michael Jackson chemo-kiting to 'NEVERLAND", forever! fa-la-la-la-la.
Much love is with you, much hope exists for you, much trust is always present...

Sue,
You must know how much you mean to everyone who knows you so that means you are getting more positive energy flowing your way than you can imagine. I am sorry to learn that you have to go through this but I believe you will come out of this fully healed. You will need so very much time to save all of us sinners!
Peace.

WHAT?!!!!!!
Lousy news. :(

A blog is a great idea. Not only does it save you from repeating, but it spares you your friends' ranting and raving. We can stomp around in our own space while we get used to this, without smearing it all over you. Thanks Colleen.

So as long as you're working out your schedule, write in Sunday, Oct. 5th. I've been asked to bring my drum group to the Susan Komen Race for the Cure. Come play with us! We could use a survivor in the group. You can play one-handed if you're sore. The race is in Great Adventure. And don't we all look fabulous in pink?

Keep the faith. Hmmm...may the Force be with you.

And you too Sue S! When's your graduation? Maybe we can come.

Much love, M & L

Hi Susan,
I must say that I was shocked when I read your email. Certainly not what I expected when I saw your email address. I guess this is one of those...damn, damn, damn moments but I want you to know that both Carole and I have learned how far medicine has advanced even from a few years ago. (We have a neighbor who is recovering from stage 4 breast cancer and is doing fine. She went through the same treatment that you will be going through.) You know that you have many people praying for and supporting you and that all of us are with you through these tough times. Hey...strength in numbers :) I want you to know too that this operation does not affect your voice and thus you are not relieved of your participation in Arise. We can arrange to hold rehearsals in the hospital after recovery.
"Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."~Joshua 1:9
Prayers of peace, strength and healing, Mike
